Volunteer tips – Canada

The comments below are from Lattitude volunteers who went on their placements in Canada in the last few years. We don’t necessarily recommend their suggestions but we think it’s useful to share feedback from those who’ve been before.
Arriving at Camp Jubilee in Canada
Country: Canada Role: Outdoor Activities Instructor

I flew out from Melbourne on Monday the 28th of February, to leave for my placement in Canada volunteering at a camp called Camp Jubilee. My flight had one stop for two and half hours in Los Angeles. This should have been plenty of time to catch my connecting flight. It should have been, except that there were huge line ups at customs and it took about two hours to get through. So I missed my connecting flight, this was the first time I had ever travelled at all let alone by myself. But I got myself onto another flight and arrived in Canada.

Amanda Riley volunteered in Canada in 2010. She is now starting her first year of Nursing at Charles Darwin University in Darwin, NT and answered a few of our questions about her gap year.
Looking back on a Canadian adventure

I’ve been home in Sydney for around a month now after nearly 9 months of wonderful time overseas. Just to fill you in on where I was at and what I was doing, I had a placement in Canada at Camp Chief Hector working at a summer camp. My placement was to last 4 months, but I extended it to 6 months because I loved it so much!
Appreciating last few days in beautiful Canada

It has been hard to keep in contact over the past few months; summer flew by faster than I could have believed. There were 8 weeks, 4 crazy sessions, a lot of kids and a lot of horses, but I think I can safely say that those 2 months were some of the best of my life. It’s hard to describe my experience here in Canada; from what camp is like, to some of the hikes I’ve been doing, to stuff I’ve been getting up to on weekends (such as skiing…badly).
